ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone announced the promotion of Phil Marcello to Assistant Athletic Director for Communications on Friday.

"Since joining our staff, Phil has shown not only a commitment to improving our media relations and working collaboratively with various constituents but also a work ethic and can-do attitude that shows he is ready to take on additional leadership opportunities," stated Janet R. Cone, Director of Athletics.  We are excited for him and thrilled that he is a key member of our external relations team."

Joining UNC Asheville in November of 2020 as the Director of Athletic Communications, Marcello oversees the communication efforts of the department's 16 Division I teams. This past spring, Marcello guided the athletic communications office as all 16 teams competed from January to May due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving as the primary contact for men's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis and women's golf, Marcello jumped in as the media coordinator for the 2020 Mako Medical Classic men's basketball MTE last November. In addition to serving as a primary media contact, Marcello helped launch the "All in Asheville" campaign and has often filled in on various broadcasts in both the play-by-play and analyst roles.

"Phil has played an integral role in the promotion of our athletic programs over the past year, both locally and regionally," said Associate Athletics Director for External Operations David Jandrew. "This is a well-deserved promotion for the numerous ways he helps make our department better."

Prior to UNC Asheville, Marcello was the Assistant Media Relations Director for Athletics at Wofford College where he oversaw the media and communications efforts of a Top-25 men's basketball team that collected its first NCAA Tournament win in program history. Before Wofford, Marcello worked as a media relations assistant for the Southern Conference.

"I am very thankful to Janet Cone for the opportunity," Marcello said. "I also want to thank David Jandrew and all of the support staff, specifically our communications, video and social media personnel. It's truly a team effort here at UNC Asheville, and I'm excited to continue this journey as a Bulldog!"

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Marcello graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in mass communications before attaining his master's degree in sport management from Millersville University.
