07.06.2021 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Several current and former UNC Asheville baseball players have been in action this summer, competing in a variety of different leagues across the country.
Two former Bulldog pitchers are currently in minor league systems for Major League teams. First, Ryan Dull (Class of 2012) is currently pitching for the Tacoma Rainiers, which is the Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Dull, who has pitched in five different MLB organizations since being drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 2012, holds a record of 1-2 for the Rainiers and has struck out 27 hitters in 23.2 innings pitched in 2021.
The other former Bulldog in the minor leagues is Blake Brown (Class of 2020). Brown, who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies last summer as an undrafted free agent, began his professional career with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, the High-A East affiliate of the Phillies. In 16 appearances so far this summer, Brown has recorded three saves, struck out 26 hitters in 17 innings, and has held opposing hitters to an .186 batting average.
Among current Bulldogs, 12 players are playing this summer in six different leagues stretching from Kansas up to Maine and back down south to North Carolina.
Leading the charge for Asheville in the summer leagues has been a tandem of players that will be seniors next spring, Dominic Freeberger and Jacob Edwards. Both Freeberger and Edwards are playing for Sanford Mainers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). A 2021 All-Big South First Team pick, Freeberger is hitting .254 with Sanford and leads the team with 17 hits. Edwards, meanwhile, has been one of his team's top pitchers this summer posting a 1.44 ERA and 17 strikeouts in four starts covering 18.2 innings.
