ASHEVILLE N.C. – UNC Asheville Athletics in conjunction with the Asheville Tennis Association and the Asheville Racquet Club are sponsoring the inaugural "Champions Junior Tennis Camps" presented by HomeTrust Bank.
The camps were the brainchild of North Carolina Tennis Foundation Hall of Famer and founder of the Asheville Racquet Club, Buster Brown.
"Champions Junior Tennis Camp is centered on caring about the development of young girls and boys through the sport of tennis," Brown said of the goal of the summer's camps.
The camps are aimed at helping the underserved youth ages 11-15 in the area, and will be held the weeks of June 21-25 and June 28-July 2 at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown location from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
"The camp is not the first of its kind," said Jacob Dye, Director of Communications and Marketing for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. "It is the first to be supported in whole part by a collegiate tennis program."
"We are thrilled to be teaming up with the Asheville Tennis Association and Asheville Racquet Club for these camps," stated Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "Lise (Gregory) and Tom (Hand) are great representatives of our University and the sport of tennis and are excited to introduce the game of tennis to these young campers."
Each camper will get a tennis racquet, a can of balls, t-shirt and a free lunch each day.
"The Asheville Tennis Association has a major goal to "serve the underserved" populations of the Asheville area," said President of the Asheville Tennis Association (ATA) Jeff Joyce. "The ATA's commitment to this goal is enhanced by its participation in the Champions Junior Tennis Camp. Â We are very proud to be involved."
Lise Gregory and Tom Hand, the respective head tennis coaches at UNC Asheville, will be instrumental to providing the instruction, guidance and fun along the way.
"We are excited to work with Buster Brown and the Asheville Tennis Association on this event," said UNC Asheville Head Women's Tennis Coach Lise Gregory. "This event is truly a win-win for everyone."
"What's not to love about this project?" I think it's a great idea," said UNC Asheville Men's Tennis Coach Tom Hand. "I'm excited to see what we can do."
