Bulldogs post 3.216 GPA for Spring Semester

ASHEVILLE N.C. – UNC Asheville student-athletes finished out a busy 2021 spring semester in strong fashion, posting a 3.216 GPA as a department, finishing the academic year with a 3.241 GPA overall as a unit.
Overall, 258 student-athletes were enrolled for the spring semester, with 177 Bulldogs (69 percent) earning Athletic Honor Roll Recipient status after completing the semester with at least a 3.0 GPA. Sixty-two student-athletes garnered Dean's List recognition with GPAs between 3.50 and 3.99 while 43 Bulldog earned the Chancellor's List distinction with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
"I'm extremely proud of our student-athletes and their efforts in the classroom this semester," stated Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "In addition to their tough academic schedule, our Bulldog student-athletes successfully juggled the demands of their respective sports in a semester which was ever-changing due to COVID-19. I would like to thank Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success Rebecca Nelms, as well as all of our great UNC Asheville Professors and coaches who helped our Bulldogs finish the year strong."
All in all 12 of UNC Asheville's programs earned a team GPA of 3.0 or higher this spring. Men's tennis capped off its impressive spring semester by posting the highest GPA for the department, 3.649, while volleyball tennis finished the semester with the top team GPA among women's sports checking in with a 3.621 GPA.
Additionally, four Bulldogs earned the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for their respective sports this spring as Taylor Durall (Men's Soccer), Charlie Morkel (Men's Tennis), Lize Alet Morkel (Women's Tennis) and Grace Volk (Volleyball) all garnered the conference recognition.
With the 2020-21 academic year in the books, 15 of UNC Asheville's 16 programs earned a 3.0 or greater team GPA. Women's cross country had the highest team GPA for the academic year with a 3.65, while men's tennis paced the men's sports posting a 3.57 GPA. Additionally, 26 Bulldogs completed their degrees following the spring semester.
"I can only guess at the stress a pandemic adds on top of the usual demands of the college classroom and athletic competition," said Rebecca Nelms. "These excellent grades show the determination and resiliency of our student-athletes to be their very best regardless of whatever challenges they face. I couldn't be more proud to be on their team."
