St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Shildt to join Noontime with the Bulldogs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville athletics department is excited to announce that Asheville alum and current Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals Mike Shildt will be the next featured guest on the "Noontime with the Bulldogs" webinar series sponsored by Mako Medical. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 12 and will be hosted by Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone.
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Shildt played his high school ball at Olympic before joining the Bulldog family as a player (87-90) before serving as an assistant coach for Asheville in 1992-93. After his collegiate career, Shildt started coaching at the high school level, working his way up to the UNC Charlotte baseball staff. While in Charlotte, Shildt founded the On Deck Baseball Academy in Pineville, North Carolina. Shildt would then work as a major league baseball scout before beginning his coaching career at the Single-A affiliate of the Cardinals in 2004.
After stints in New Jersey and New York, Shildt's next stop was nearby Johnson City, where he guided the Cardinals to back-to-back championships and was named Appalachian League Manager of the Year. Earning the George Kissell Award for excellence in player development for the Cardinals, Shildt managed the Double-A affiliate (Springfield) before moving up to the Triple-A level (Memphis Redbirds) and was promoted to St. Louis in 2017. In July of 2018, Shildt was named interim manager of the Cardinals before the organization awarded him a three-year contract as the permanent manager in August. After guiding the Cardinals to a 91-71 record, a division title and an NLCS appearance, Shildt earned the National League Manager of the Year award given out by Major League Baseball.
