Records Continue to Fall for Asheville on Day Two of Catamount Classic

04.17.2021 | Track and Field

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Records continued to fall for the UNC Asheville track & field teams on the final day of the Catamount Classic on Saturday. Anthony Mason set a new program record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.77 and teamed with Rob Brenneman, Jalen Anderson, Bryson Riddick to establish a new Bulldog record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:17.68.

"We had so many personal-bests and seasonal-bests this weekend among all events," Head Coach Joel Williams said afterward. "This weekend was easily our best meet of the season so far."

In terms of scoring for this weekend, the women's team placed fourth among the eight schools competing with 129.50 points, while the men's squad finished second of a field of seven with a point total of 161.

The Bulldogs also picked up event victories in the 200-meter dash and the 4x100m relay in addition to the record-breaking outings. Anderson paced the field in the 200m with a time of 21.62. Anderson, who also set a new outdoor school record in the same event on Friday, was just .22 seconds from matching his time in the prelims. Anderson was not done, though, as he helped another Asheville relay team pick up a first-place finish. Anderson, along with Riddick, Mason, and Akin Williams, paced the 4x100m relay field with a time of 41.30. That time was just .14 seconds shy of matching the school record in that event as well.

Asheville not only won its share of events, but it also logged several podium finishes. Overall, the Bulldogs placed second in five events Saturday and third in four others.

Overall, the success as a team and at an individual level was impressive for the Bulldogs on Saturday. Asheville had student-athletes compete in 24 events on Saturday. In 20 of those events, either a new season-best mark for the Bulldogs was established, or a new personal-best was by an individual student-athlete competing.

The Bulldogs will look to build on their stellar weekend next Saturday when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to compete at the Aggie Invitational on the campus of North Carolina A&T. This one-day meet will be Asheville's last tune-up competition before the Big South Outdoor Championships in mid-May.
