CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Friday that UNC Asheville women's basketball player Nadiria Evans earned All-Big South First Team honors, and sophomore Kai Carter was an All-Big South Second Team selection. Additionally, senior Tamiah Lewis earned a spot on the league's All-Academic team.
"Just so proud of these two for being recognized by the Big South," said head coach Honey Brown of Evans and Carter. "They are two of our hardest workers and so well-deserving of these honors."
Evans leads the Bulldogs in scoring (420 points, 17.5 PPG), assists (79), and steals (33) in 2020-21. She has scored 30 or more points three times and surpassed the 20 points eight times. Evans scored 34 points twice, which is the most of any Big South player this season. The Gainesville, Florida native also reached the 1,200-point and 1,000-point milestones this season. She ranks among the conference statistical leaders in every major category except 3-pointers, rebounds, and blocks. On a national level, Evans ranks top 10 in the nation in free throw attempts (5th – 173) and makes (9th – 125).
"Naridia has grown so much as a player this past year," said Brown. "She faces some of the toughest defenders every time out there on the court, and her success is a testament to her time in the gym and commitment to getting better."
Carter has developed into one of Asheville's top players in 2020-21. She ranks second on the team in scoring (13.0 PPG) but leads the Bulldogs in 3-pointers made (46) and rebounds (183). Carter also ranks among the Big South leaders in 3-point field goal percentage (.341), rebounding average (7.6 RPG), and defensive rebounding (143). In 13 of the team's 24 games, Carter has netted multiple 3-pointers in a contest.
"Kai took advantage of her opportunities and role this season," said Brown. "Her scoring and rebounding have been huge for us this year, and she's a really important piece of our team."
Lewis has appeared in all 24 games for Asheville this season, including six appearances in the starting lineup. She has scored 73 points, grabbed 41 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. Lewis is also tied for third on the team with 17 made 3-pointers. Academically, Lewis holds a 3.723 grade-point average and is a chemistry major with a minor in neuroscience.
"Tamiah is the epitome of a student-athlete," Brown said. "Her work ethic on and off the court is really strong, and she is deserving of this recognition."
