Morkel named Big South Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

ASHEVILLE N.C. – The Big South announced its tennis players of the week on Wednesday, with UNC Asheville's Charlie Morkel being named Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all competition March 22-28.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Morkel had a strong week going 2-0 at the No. 1 doubles flight and 2-0 at the No. 2 singles flight. Morkel and Jon Brann Reid battled to a 7-5 win against Presbyterian, with and before capping off his day by topping his opponent 6-3, 6-2 to help the Bulldogs edge out the Blue Hose 4-3 at the Asheville Racquet Club on Wednesday. On Sunday, Morkel and Reid were once again victorious at the No. 1 doubles flight, with the senior taking his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-0 as the Bulldogs topped the Highlanders 5-2.
Morkel, who ranks second in the Big South with a 6-2 record at No. 2 singles, has helped Asheville clinch at least a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big South Championship. This is Morkel's second Big South Athlete of the Week honor.
