Baseball Preps for Mid-Week Matchup with Gardner-Webb

03.22.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Gardner-Webb in a mid-week Big South matchup. The first pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – The Bulldogs picked up a key 4-2 win over Campbell on Sunday to conclude a three-game set at Greenwood Field. With the win, Asheville took two of the three games against the Camels, clinching its first conference series victory of the spring.

Big South Reliever of the Week – Earlier today, Justin Honeycutt was named the Big South's Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played March 15-21. Honeycutt, who struck out 10 batters in 6.2 innings and was the winning pitcher in Saturday's 8-6 win, is the first Bulldog to earn this honor since the conference split the pitcher of the week award into two categories (starter and reliever) in 2018.

Brandon Getting on Base – In addition to chasing the program's all-time home run record, senior Brandon Lankford has been putting together a stellar on-base streak through the first month of the 2021 season. Lankford has reached base safely in 14 of the team's 15 games that includes the past 13 straight contests coming into Tuesday's game vs. Gardner-Webb.

Scoring First – A strength for Asheville so far in 2021 has been its ability to score first. The Bulldogs have scored first in 11 of their 15 games to date, and have outscored opponents 26-22 in the first two innings as well.

About Gardner-Webb – The Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 3-9 so far this season, dropped two of three games to Charleston Southern over the weekend. A player to watch for Gardner-Webb Tuesday is Keiji Parkhurst. Parkhurst is hitting .277 and leads the team in home runs (3) and RBI (11).

Series Rewind vs. Gardner-Webb – The all-time series between Gardner-Webb and Asheville has been a highly competitive one, especially lately. Over the last 10 games between the two programs, each team has won five times. The last meetings between the conference rivals occurred back in 2019. That three-game series was played in Shelby, N.C. and Gardner-Webb won two of the three. However, Asheville did the same in the last series played at Greenwood Field back in 2018.
