Justin Honeycutt Named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week
03.22.2021 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday that UNC Asheville's Justin Honeycutt was named the league's relief pitcher of the week for games played between March 15-21. Honeycutt is the first Bulldog to earn this honor since the league split the pitcher of the week award into two separate categories (starting pitcher and reliever) in 2018.
"Justin has done a great job over the last few weeks in his new role," said Head Coach Scott Friedholm. "He was able to keep a very good Campbell offense off balance in game one Saturday that allowed us to come back and win."
Overall, Honeycutt appeared in two games last week that covered 6.2 innings. Honeycutt's best outing came in game one of a doubleheader Saturday vs. Campbell. With the Bulldogs trailing 4-2, Honeycutt entered the game and pitched the next 5.2 innings allowing one run on two hits to go along with a career-high 10 strikeouts. Thanks to Honeycutt's stellar outing, the Bulldogs were able to score five runs in the eighth inning to come back to defeat the Camels, 8-6. Furthermore, Honeycutt's 10 strikeouts are the most for any Bulldog pitcher this season and the most since Blake Brown accomplished the same feat on February 29, 2020, vs. Belmont.
Honeycutt and the rest of the Bulldogs will be back in action Tuesday when they host Gardner-Webb in another Big South matchup. The first pitch for that contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
