12.02.2021 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will open their indoor seasons this weekend when they make the short trip to Boone, N.C. to compete at the Appalachian State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Quick Look Back at 2020-21 – The 2020-21 track & field season was limited to outdoor only due to the ongoing CoVID-19 pandemic. Asheville did post one of its most successful seasons in recent memory last spring. At the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the men's team placed fourth, while the women's squad finished fifth. The fourth-place finish by the men's team is its best since 2000, while the women's team placing fifth marked its best placing at the league's showcase outdoor meet since 2013.
In addition to their work at the conference championships, the Bulldogs rewrote several records as they established nine new school records throughout the course of last season.
Preseason Predictions – The Big South unveiled its annual preseason polls on Thursday as voted on by the league's head coaches. The Bulldog men's team was selected to finish sixth, while the women's squad was tabbed to place eighth.
Note from Coach - "Our team and staff is excited to kick off an indoor season especially as we did not have one last year," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "We feel like going into this season we have a number of athletes who can take down some school records and certainly work their way onto all time top five lists. Last year knowing we were unlikely to have an indoor, we held an intrasquad meet in November. That was a good alternative but competing in actual indoor meets vs. other teams is much preferred."
About the Field/Meet Information – The Bulldogs will be joined at the two-day meet by Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Converse, Gardner-Webb, Milligan, Tusculum, Winthrop, and Wofford. Action will begin at 5 p.m. Friday with the men's weight throw and long jump. Competition will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault and high jump along with the men's long jump and shot put. For the full schedule click HERE.
How to Follow – While there will be no live stream for the meet, there will be live results available HERE.
