Cross Country set to compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships

11.11.2021 | Cross Country

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams will make the trek to Louisville, Kentucky for the annual NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday. The women's 6K race will kick things off at 11 a.m., while the men's 10K will follow around noon.

Last Time Out – In their last competition, the Bulldogs took part in the Big South Cross Country Championships. Both teams fared well as the men's squad placed third with 98 points, while the women's team finished fourth with 119 points. Furthermore, by placing third, the men's team notched its best finish since placing second in 2000. As for the women's squad, the fourth-place nod meant the Bulldogs have ranked fifth or higher at seven straight conference championship races.

Salute to All-Conference runners – Clara Wincheski (5th – 18:00.2) and John Ciprich (12th – 25:33.9) took home All-Big South honors by finishing among the top-14 runners in their respective contests. Wincheski, who was also fifth in last spring's Cross Country Championships, joins an exclusive club in Bulldog cross country history, becoming the fifth woman from UNC Asheville to earn All-Conference accolades three times. Additionally, India Appleton and Nathaniel Edwards landed spots on their respective All-Academic teams for their work in the classroom.

Regional Championship Recap –The Bulldogs and their fellow regional competitors will face off in the first regional races since 2019. Back in the 2019 races hosted by Virginia, Asheville had several runners log new personal-best times in both the 6K and 10K. Among these runners that set new benchmarks for themselves are current Bulldogs Ciprich, Appleton, and Alyx Evans.

Note from Coach - I am excited to see us compete as a team this Friday," said Head Coach Adam Puett. "The Southeast region has some of the best competition in the country, so it's always fun to see how we stack up against everyone."

Race Information – Friday's races will be contested E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in the suburbs of Louisville. Fans can follow along with live results HERE. For more information on both races, visit the Championship Central page HERE.
