KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams had a strong showing on Friday at the Big South Cross Country Championships. The men's team placed third with 98 points, while the women's squad placed fourth with 119 points.
"I'm extremely proud of our teams today," said Head Coach Adam Puett. "We went out and executed our race plan, and it showed in our results. Both of our teams were picked to finish fifth in the conference, and we improved upon that."
Both Bulldog teams continued their string of stellar outings at the league's showcase cross country event on Friday. By placing third, the men's team notched its best finish since finishing second in 2000. As for the women's squad, the fourth-place nod meant the Bulldogs have placed fifth or higher at seven straight conference championship races.
Individually, the Bulldogs had several runners on both teams turn in solid performances Friday. Clara Wincheski (5th – 18:00.2) and John Ciprich (12th – 25:33.9) took home All-Big South honors by finishing among the top-14 runners in their respective contests. Wincheski, who was also fifth in last spring's Cross Country Championships, joins an exclusive club in Bulldog cross country history, becoming the fifth woman from UNC Asheville to earn All-Conference accolades three times. Furthermore, all 14 Bulldog runners who competed on Friday placed in the upper half of their respective races.Â
In addition to the action on the course, two Bulldogs were recognized for their work in the classroom. India Appleton from the women's team and Nathaniel Edwards from the men's program both landed spots on the Big South's All-Academic team.
Asheville will return to action on November 12 when it competes at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. This year's edition of the Championships will be contested in Louisville, Kentucky.
