SPARTANBURG, S.C.
 – The UNC Asheville cross country teams earned two third-place finishes at the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday morning.

Both the men's and women's races featured a field of 17 teams and over 130 runners, and the Bulldogs posted several top-20 finishes.

"As a team, both our men's and women's teams made improvements upon where we were last race as well as earlier in the year," said Head Coach Adam Puett.

In the men's 8k race, Adam Hessler led the way with a 10th place finish and a time of 26:16.3, followed by Daniel Hopkins, who finished 16th with a time of 26:42.4. Not far behind was John Ciprich with a time of 26:50.4 (20th), Andrew Okon at 26:57.9 (22nd), and Brock Newsome with a finish at 27:14.8 (29th). The Bulldogs finished with a total time of 2:14:02, which placed them just over three minutes out of 1st place.

The women were led by two top-15 finishes from Clara Wincheski (5th – 18:26.0) and India Appleton (13th – 18:59.0). Ashley Tysiac was close behind with a 16th place finish at 19:18.2, followed by Alyx Evans at 25th with a time of 19:44.1, and Ashleigh Patterson at 38th with a time of 20:16.8. The women were just under a minute out of second place with a total time of 1:36:44 and a little over five minutes out of first.

"We were able to have a bigger point spread on teams we have previously beaten as well as close up some gaps on teams that have beaten us. We now have two weeks to prepare and sharpen up for the Big South Conference Championships."

With the regular season completed, UNC Asheville will have two weeks off before heading to the Big South Conference Championships in Kernersville, North Carolina, on October 29th.
