BIG SOUTH RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday that UNC Asheville's Nadiria Evans was named the Big South Women's Basketball Player of the week for games played Dec. 28-Jan. 3. Evans was also recognized by College Sports Madness as the Big South Mid-Major Player of the Week.
The weekly honor Monday marks the first weekly honor for the Bulldogs this season, and the first for the program since Sonora Dengokl earned the same distinction on January 21, 2019. For Evans, it is the second time she has earned the Big South Player of the Week award with the first occurring on December 17, 2018.
"We are so happy for Nadiria," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Honey Brown. "She is a tireless worker on the court and in the film room. Her hard work is paying off not only for this week but all season. Your Bulldog family is proud of you!"
Evans made some history last week in becoming the 22nd player in program history to eclipse the 1,000- point mark. The Gainesville, Florida native joined this exclusive club with an impactful 34-point performance to help the Bulldogs knock off Longwood, 74-69. Evans' 34 points not only matched her career-high but also matched the most points scored by any Big South player this season that she set earlier in December at High Point.
Evans, who has scored in double figures in all nine games in 2020-21, currently leads the conference in scoring averaging nearly 21 points (20.9) per contest. Furthermore, she leads Asheville in field goals made (63), field goal percentage (55.8), free throws made (61), free throw percentage (76.3), and assists (22).
Evans and the rest of the Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action next Sunday and Monday when they welcome Hampton to Kimmel Arena. Sunday's game will air on ESPN+, while Monday's will be on ESPN3. Other following options include the radio broadcast on Rewind 100.3 or live stats.
