BIG SOUTH ANNOUNCEMENT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced its annual Preseason Baseball Poll Thursday afternoon, and the UNC Asheville baseball team was picked to finish ninth with 24 points.

Asheville is coming off an abbreviated 2020 season where it only played 16 games due to the pandemic. The Bulldogs, which finished 5-11 last spring, return several key players while welcoming several new players into the fold.

Offensively, Asheville returns 2019 All-Big South First Team honoree Brandon Lankford. Lankford needs just eight more home runs to become the program's all-time home run leader. On the mound, the Bulldogs return Ryan Douglas, who posted a 1-2 record with a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings pitched as a freshman last spring, and lefthander Jacob Edwards, who struck out 21 hitters in 23 innings to go along with a .207 opponent's batting average.

UNC Asheville is scheduled to open its 2021 season on February 23 when it travels to Western Carolina. The Bulldogs' will lift the lid off its home schedule on March 19-20 when it hosts Big South rival Campbell in a three-game series. The full 2021 baseball schedule will be released soon. Stay tuned to uncabulldogs.com for the full schedule announcement when it becomes available, along with any changes that occur throughout the spring.
