DAY ONE RESULTS (PDF)

STATESBORO, Ga.
 – In its first day of competition in 2021, the UNC Asheville swimming and diving team turned in a stellar first day at Georgia Southern on Saturday. Midway through the two-day meet, the Bulldogs lead the Eagles on the scoreboard, 129.5-111.5.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead on the Eagles as they won or finished tied for the top spot in the first five events. The quartet of Addison Wright, Amelia Ham, Anna Nabors along with anchor Abby Parks pulled off a comeback win in the 400y medley relay with a time of 4:00.57 to set the tone.

With a relay victory under their belt, the meet moved to individual events, and Asheville's success continued. The Bulldog tandem of Kylie Johnson (18:33.38) and Aleta Jewell (18:40.34) finished with the top two fastest times in the 1650y freestyle. These two swimmers came back later and placed second and third in the 500y freestyle as well.

After the first two events, Jessie Frank (200y free – 1:56.40), Delaney Carlton (50y free – 24.09), and Amelia Ham (200y IM – 2:10.59) all finished first or tied for the top spot in their respective events to continue the run for the Bulldogs. Ham also placed second in the 200y breaststroke (2:28.30) to close out the individual events.

Another highlight for Asheville came in the 100-yard freestyle as each of the top four times belonged to Bulldogs. Carlton picked up her second event win on the day with a time of 52.72, while Parks (53.22), Frank (54.02), and Bela Stuart (54.75) were not too far behind the pace.

In the diving portion of Saturday's action, the Bulldogs also had some standout performances. Jade Canady placed second in both the prelims and finals in 1M diving with point totals of 197.55 and 206.78. Senior Megan Almond set new personal bests on back-to-back dives with point totals of 150 and 150.23, and Jessica Brock contributed, placing third and fourth in the prelims and finals, respectively.

"I am really excited with how the entire dive team performed today," said Almond. "We showed confidence and strength on the board. The encouragement I received from my teammates helped me achieve two personal records on 1-meter events. Considering how we performed in and out of the pool on day one, we are ready to smash day two!"

Asheville and Georgia Southern will close out the two-day meet on Sunday. The first event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and can be watched on the Georgia Southern's Facebook page.

"Sunday's line-up includes two 3M diving events, the 1000 free and 400 IM," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "We are excited to race again tomorrow as the team begins preparing for CCSA Championships."
