05.20.2020 | Women's Swimming & Diving

CHARLOTTE – The Big South Conference announced today that UNC Asheville student-athlete Adee Weller of the swimming and diving program was one of 12 student-athletes to receive the prestigious George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence. Weller is the first athlete from the swimming and diving program to receive this honor, and the first Bulldog to win it since the 2005-2006 academic year.

"Our staff is incredibly proud of Adee for her excellent representation of our program and the University," said UNC Asheville Head Swimming and Diving Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "Her outstanding achievements in the pool and classroom will not soon be replicated. Adee's dedication to her research and studies has been aptly rewarded with her receipt of the George A. Christenberry Award."

Weller, who is the lone UNC Asheville swimmer to hold a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0, recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. Furthermore, she recently received the Outstanding Performance Award in political science. This award goes to the political science student at UNC Asheville, who had the best overall performance, as selected by the faculty. An eight-time Chancellor's list selection, Weller will attend Emory University in the Fall to pursue a Ph. D in political science with hopes of becoming a university professor.

Weller has been a critical contributor for the Bulldogs during her career as she is in the top three all-time in program history in every freestyle event and is a member of four school-record relay squads.

As mentioned earlier, Weller is the first Bulldog to be awarded this honor since the 2005-2006 academic year. Overall, Weller is just the third UNC Asheville student-athlete ever to earn this distinction. The other two student-athletes are Ralf Melis (men's basketball – 1995-1996) and Natasha Lucki (women's tennis – 2005-2006).

Big South member institutions nominate one male and one female undergraduate student-athlete for the annual Christenberry Award.  The award's namesake is after George A. Christenberry, the former President of Augusta College (now Augusta University) and one of the founders of the Big South Conference.  A member of the Big South Hall of Fame, Christenberry served as the league's first President from 1983-86.
