INDIANAPOLIS – Five UNC Asheville Athletics teams were honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards based on their Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.

The NCAA announced the newest recipients Wednesday, May 13.

The Bulldogs were third in the Big South Conference in number of teams recognized, as the conference set a personal record with 32 teams receiving the recognition. For the Bulldogs, the women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's basketball and volleyball teams earned the Public Recognition Award.

The women's tennis program has the longest current streak of recognitions for UNC Asheville, as this is the 10th consecutive year it has been honored by the NCAA. It is the sixth consecutive season the women's basketball program has earned the recognition, while volleyball has earned it each of the past three seasons and women's golf and women's soccer in the last two years.

The awards are presented each year to the teams in the top 10 percent of APR for each sport, with the current results based on the 2018-19 year.

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR.  The score honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR (the most recent APRs are based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  By measuring eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of academic performance in each sport.
