CHARLOTTE – Junior Charlie Morkel of the UNC Asheville men's tennis team has been selected as the Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, in addition to being named to the All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Morkel becomes the first member of the Bulldog's men's tennis program to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year since the award's inception in 1995. He currently possesses a 4.0 grade-point average pursuing an undergraduate degree in economics. He has earned distinction on the Chancellor's List each of the past three semesters.
Morkel led the team in singles and doubles victories during the abbreviated 2020 spring campaign. He had compiled an 8-6 singles record, with a 6-4 mark coming at the No. 1 draw. He also compiled five doubles victories playing at all three pairings.
Morkel earned the Big South's Player of the Week, February 5, for his role in helping the Bulldogs take down James Madison, 5-2, in their home opener. He secured a critical three-set victory at No. 1 singles, which tied the dual at 2-2. He also teamed up with Oli Nolan to score a 6-2 doubles victory on Court One.
In his sophomore season, Morkel was named Second-Team All-Big South in singles after posting a 16-5 overall record and 8-0 mark in conference play. He put together a 10-match winning streak during the season.
