ACADEMICS

Q: If I need a tutor for my on-line class, who do I contact?
A: You can find the days and times of tutoring 'hangouts' here.  You can set an appointment with the writing center for help at any stage of papers for any course here.  For Math or Statistics related help you can schedule and in-person or remote appointment with the Math lab via this link.  If you have other courses that you need help with please contact Rebecca Nelms at rnelms@unca.edu or 828-545-1116.

Q: How can a professor see if I am 'attending' class?
A: Almost all of the academic platforms have methods to measure participation / attendance. Depending on the platform it can be something as simple as a list of who is currently logged in, or tracking your viewing time or something more relational like the ability to ask questions during the streaming period.  Professors know the difference between logged into class and participating in class.

Q: Will Rebecca be available to provide advising for Spring classes?
A. Yes, Rebecca is available to help you select classes to propose to your advisor that work around your practice and travel requirements. Please sign up directly on her calendar (calendly.com/Rnelms) and enter your phone number so she can reach you at the assigned time.

ATHLETICS PRACTICE, COMPETITION AND EVENTS

Following NCAA requirements, our student-athletes were tested when they arrived on campus. Those in high-contact sports, such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball, will be tested every two weeks when their sport is out of season and every week when their sport is in season. Baseball, as a medium-contact sport, has a periodic testing schedule of every two weeks, where 25-50% of the team is tested. Athletes in low-contact sports receive testing if symptomatic. This testing schedule also applies to inner bubble personnel in those sports.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

Q: What about the Big South Conference (BSC) competitions?
A:  With the health and well-being of its student-athletes as its top priority, the Big South Conference announced earlier this month, it is delaying its fall sports seasons with the intent of playing in the spring. This includes the sports of men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball. Additionally, fall competitions in the sports of men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis, and out of season competitions in spring sports have been suspended as well.  The Big South Football Members voted to allow up to four non-conference games in the fall at institutional discretion. Winter and Spring Sports remain unchanged at this time.

Q: What about Big South policy regarding practices/training etc.?
A.  Big South member institutions may continue with permissible athletics activities, as defined by NCAA regulations and with the exception of fall sport competition, at their own discretion and in accordance with applicable local and state regulations and procedures.

NCAA

Q: Where can I find helpful information from the NCAA?

Q: What other actions have been made related to Regulations and Policies Impacted by COVID-19?
A: Emergency Legislation Adopted to Establish a Temporary Recruiting Dead Period. The Council Coordination Committee adopted emergency legislation to establish a temporary recruiting dead period (as defined in NCAA Bylaw 13.02.5.5) in all NCAA Division I sports, effective immediately.  The dead period will remain in effect at least until September 30, at which time the Council Coordination Committee will re-evaluate the status of the situation.

Issues Related to Seasons of Competition Legislation.  The Council Coordination Committee agreed that it will be appropriate to grant relief for the use of a season of competition for student-athletes who have participated in spring and fall sports for the 2020 seasons.  The committee recognizes that several issues need to be addressed related to providing an additional season of competition, including financial aid implications.  The committee will also discuss issues related to seasons of competition for winter sport student-athletes who were unable to participate in conference and NCAA championships.  The committee recognizes that student-athletes are making life decisions that will be helped by understanding whether an additional season of competition would be available, and as such, will work in a timely manner to make informed decisions.  Finally, the committee will review and discuss the additional issues in a timely manner and decisions will be communicated to the membership as they are made.

Actions to Support Student-Athletes and Communities.  The Council Coordination Committee reiterated that conferences and institutions should make decisions and take action in the best interests of their student-athletes and communities without first seeking approval through an interpretation or waiver.  For example, institutional discretion should be used to provide appropriate support, benefits and expenses to student-athletes as adjustments are made to academic and athletics schedules.
The Council Coordination Committee emphasized the need to prioritize the mental health of student-athletes, coaches and administrators.

Additional updates and guidance on legislative issues that arise in the coming days and weeks will be announced through LSDBi and provided to conference offices.  The NCAA staff is reviewing and accessing priorities to rules-related issues with the assistance of governance entities. Specific questions may be submitted to d1news@ncaa.org.  Questions will be addressed by the NCAA academic and membership affairs staff with the appropriate assistance from governance committees.
