02.29.2020 | Men's Basketball
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's basketball team closed out its regular season, falling on the road at Campbell, 78-69, Saturday evening inside Gore Arena.
Lavar Batts, Jr. led all scorers in the game with 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. It is the second time he has eclipsed 20 points in a game and the first since he scored 40 against South Carolina State, December 11.
DeVon Baker scored 16 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while LJ Thorpe added 13 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Campbell (15-15, 6-12 Big South) held a five-point lead in the early stages of the game, 13-8, but the Bulldogs (14-15, 8-10 Big South) went on a 10-0 run after Batts knocked down a 3-pointer at the 13:07 mark. Jamon Battle converted on an and-one, and Baker followed with consecutive jumpers to put the Bulldogs up 18-13 heading into the second media timeout.
The Camels responded with an 8-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead, 21-18, at the 9:21 mark of the first frame. A two-point jumper by Thorpe halted the run, but Campbell scored the next six to make it 27-20 before Batts drove in for a layup with 5:49 remaining.
The home team built a 14-point lead, 38-24, but Tajion Jones hit a turnaround jumper in the paint and buried a 3-pointer in the final minute to cut the halftime deficit to single-digits, 38-29. Batts and Jones each had seven points, while Baker and Thorpe scored six in the first half.
Both teams came out firing out of the locker room, trading buckets before the first media timeout of the second half. Batts scored eight of the Bulldogs' 11 points in the first four-plus minutes of the half.
The Camels built the lead up to as much as 16 points on a number of occasions, and held that lead with 6:54 left in the half. Baker would then hit three straight two-point buckets to narrow the gap to 10 points, 65-55, with 5:25 remaining, forcing Campbell to call a timeout.
Campbell bumped the lead back up to 13 points, 70-57, with 4:05 left in the game. Batts led a charge from that point, hitting a 3-pointer in a 6-0 run where he scored all six points. The Camels responded with a basket on their next possession and were able to hold on for the nine-point victory.
