ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will open the 2020-21 season on Wednesday when it hosts rival Western Carolina at Kimmel Arena. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Catamounts is scheduled for 1 p.m.
New Year, New Coach - For the first time since 2012-13, the Bulldogs will have a new Head Coach roaming the sidelines this season. Honey Brown was named the leader of the program in early April after Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick Brown stepped down after eight seasons. Brown is the 11th Head Coach in the program's history and the seventh since the Bulldogs moved to the Division I level for the 1986-87 campaign.
Preseason Prediction – UNC Asheville was projected to finish seventh in the annual Big South Preseason Poll earlier this month. It marks the third time in program history, the Bulldogs have been predicted to finish seventh, with the last being in 2015-16. In that instance, the Bulldogs racked up 26 victories on their way to winning the Big South Regular Season and Tournament Championships.
Senior Spotlight - In addition to being picked seventh in the preseason poll, senior guard Nadiria Evans garnered Preseason All-Big South First Team honors. Evans is the third Bulldog in as many years to land a spot on the First Team, joining Jessica Wall (2018-19) and Sonora Dengokl (2019-20). As a junior, Evans led the team in field goals made (157), free throws made (102), points scored (428), and steals (38) on her way to earning All-Big South Honorable Mention distinction.
About Western Carolina – The Catamounts posted a 5-25 record during the 2019-20 season with wins over UVa-Wise, Charleston Southern, Southern Wesleyan, and Mercer. A player to watch for Western Carolina Wednesday is Lauren LaPlant, who garnered Preseason All-Southern Conference team honors earlier this month. LaPlant broke the WCU single-season record for three-pointers made with 80 last season.
How to Follow – Wednesday's game can be watched on ESPN+, which is where you can catch all Bulldog home and conference games throughout the 2020-21 season. Live stats will also be available HERE.
