Bulldogs to Open Conference Play at Home Against USC Upstate

09.26.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – By the time UNC Asheville takes the court, Saturday, against USC Upstate, it will have been 11 days since its last match when it took on Western Carolina on the road.

The Bulldogs' (5-5) 2 p.m., Saturday contest with the Spartans will also be their first match at home since sweeping South Carolina State, September 10. Additionally, the matchup with USC Upstate marks the beginning of Big South Conference play for the Bulldogs, as they will only play league foes the remainder of the regular season, minus a return trip to South Carolina State.

Senior Julia Borges has done a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs, as she leads the team in kills (83), points (111.5) and is tied with Molly Hackett for the team lead with eight service aces. Not only has she been a force on offense, she leads the team in total blocks (30.0) and is second in digs (103). Her defensive prowess earned her Big South Defensive Player of the Week, September 16.

Ansley Rooks is also having a strong senior campaign, as she is second on the team in kills (79) and third in points (84.0) and digs (92). Sophomore Molly Hackett has become a steady contributor offensively in her first season in Asheville, as she is second in points (86.5) and third in kills (77).

Sophomore Grace Volk and senior Kailey Hackett have seen the majority of time at setter, combining for 290 assists on the season, though senior Carter Kennedy has seen an increase in the role recently.

Defensively, senior Julia Loveday and junior Cecilia Stack have joined Borges along the net, as they have accounted for 20.0 and 17.0 total blocks, respectively. Junior Kasey West leads the way with 126 digs on the season from her libero spot.

Last season, the Bulldogs finished with a 10-6 record in conference play, including a thrilling 9-0 run to close out the regular season. They made it a clean 10-0 run with a defeat of Upstate in the first round of the Big South Championship.

This season, the Spartans are 3-8, but come in having won three of their last five matches, including two-in-a-row against North Carolina A&T and Alabama A&M last week.

Saturday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+ HERE and fans can also follow along via live stats HERE. General admission tickets are $6 each or $4 for faculty/staff, senior citizens and children (5-17).
