Bulldogs Drop Match at Appalachian State in Defensive Struggle

BOONE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's soccer team battled defensively with Appalachian State, Wednesday night, but dropped the match, 1-0, on the road.
The Bulldogs (1-6-1) fought the Mountaineers (6-2) to a scoreless first half, as goalkeeper Jarrett Payne continued his strong freshman campaign, recording four of his five saves in the first half.
As a team, the Bulldogs fired off five shots, but were only able to force the Mountaineers' goalkeeper into one save on the night, which came on an Izaiah Vignali attempt in the 19th minute.
The deciding goal came in the 67th minute as Appalachian State's Nick Rogers put his second goal of the season in the back of the net.
"I thought our team competed and I thought we had a chance to win," head coach Mathes Mennell said. "I thought the game was always going to be 1-0, it was just a question of which team was going to grab the goal.
"I really liked the way our guys endeavored to play, and I thought there were some fantastic performances, we just lost to a very good App State team. That being said, I'm not much for consolations, but in terms of finally getting back to the things that we're good at, we started down that path tonight which is a positive sign."
Big South Conference play begins Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to Spartanburg to take on USC Upstate in a 7:30 p.m. match at County University Soccer Stadium
