Largest Crowd of the Season on Hand at Greenwood Field, but Bulldogs Tripped Up by Wofford
09.21.2019 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE – More than 600 Bulldog supporters were in attendance, Saturday night, at Greenwood Field, but UNC Asheville's men's soccer team fell, 4-0, to Wofford during Family Weekend.
A large contingent of Bulldog alumni and their families and friends piled into the Alumni Zone at Greenwood Field, and fun was had by all as they enjoyed food, drinks, games and a photo booth. The bleachers were also packed as a warm day turned to a cool evening with a picturesque sunset in the background.
The Bulldogs (1-5-1) put the pressure on Wofford early, earning a corner kick right out of the gate, and outshooting the Terriers (2-4) four-to-one in the first 20 minutes, although Wofford's first attempt came dangerously close, striking the top iron.
Wofford would open the scoring in the 36th minute and take a 1-0 lead into halftime, as both teams recorded eight shots in the opening frame.
The Terriers outshot the Bulldogs seven-to-five in the second half, but the visitors made their attempts count, recording three goals in the second half.
"It was a great crowd and a fantastic event, and we had a fantastic atmosphere at tonight's game," head coach Mathes Mennell said. "Wofford was effective and we have gotten away from the things that made us really good at the beginning of the year.
"For the first 20 minutes, I thought we were great, and after we just went away from everything we did well and that was the result, which is frustrating."
The Bulldogs return to action, Wednesday, when they travel to Boone to take on Appalachian State before beginning Big South play next Saturday.
