UNC Asheville Edged Out by Evansville in Defensive Struggle

09.14.2019 | Men's Soccer

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A late first-half goal by Evansville proved to be the difference in the match as UNC Asheville's men's soccer team fell to the Purple Aces, 1-0, Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (1-3-1) struggled to find a groove offensively, recording seven shots in the match, but no shots on goal. On the flipside, the Purple Aces (2-2-1) put six shots on goal, forcing five saves from freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Payne.

Evansville put pressure on the defense early in the match, earning four corner kicks in the first 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Izaiah Vignali had a nice run down the middle and his shot was blocked, drawing the first corner of the game for the Bulldogs in the 30th minute.

Three minutes later, senior Austin Howard had the Bulldogs' best chance to score, but his shot from distance glanced off the crossbar. The Purple Aces would capitalize on their chance in the 38th minute, netting the lone goal of the match.

The offense continued to struggle to get quality looks in the second half as well, with the Purple Aces swarming defensively.

Evansville had potentially dangerous attacks in the second half, but were unable to connect on a handful of crosses into the box. Their best chance came on a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box in the 73rd minute, but an aggressive save by Payne kept the Bulldogs in the match.

Vignali took a shot from distance with three minute remaining in the match, but his effort sailed high and the Purple Aces were able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless for the first time this season.

"Evansville was a very tough opponent tonight," head coach Mathes Mennell said. "They were very organized and didn't allow us to get into any type of rhythm. We really struggled to find ways to break them down. For the first time this season we were held to no clear chances and it is tough to win games if you don't threaten the other team's goal.

"I give Coach (Marshall) Ray and his team a lot of credit for that, but we certainly got away from some of the things we do well."
