UNC Asheville Athletics Hosts Scholarship Luncheon

ASHEVILLE – The UNC Asheville Athletics department hosted a luncheon, Thursday afternoon, in appreciation of Bulldog supporters who have contributed to endowed scholarships or have donated at the 225 level toward annual athletic scholarships.

The luncheon provided a unique opportunity for the supporters who have contributed to athletic scholarships to meet the student-athletes whom their contributions directly effect, and also for the student-athletes to meet those individuals who have helped to provide toward the academic and athletic endeavors.

Each table featured student-athletes, supporters, coaches and athletics staff, and after a brief welcome from Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone, each group enjoyed lunch and each other's company.

"I want to thank all of our loyal Bulldog supporters, not just for attending today's lunch, but for all they do to support our student-athletes throughout the year," Cone said. "This luncheon not only provides an opportunity for our student-athletes to engage with our supporters, it allows our supporters to see the positive impact their contributions through endowed and annual scholarships make in the lives of our student-athletes."

University chancellor Nancy J. Cable kicked things off after lunch with an enthusiastic, "It's a great day to be a Bulldog!" that had the crowd excited for the rest of the program. Cone acted as the de facto emcee, calling student-athletes up to the front of the room to give some background into their teams and experiences at UNC Asheville.

First, Cone brought up women's basketball senior Brooke Jordan-Brown to speak about how she plans to use what she's learned about leadership as she pursues a career in pharmacy. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president Bryson Lee from the women's soccer team also earned a call up to speak about her work with SAAC and all it does to help all Bulldogs' student-athletes.

The coaches didn't get out of public speaking either, as women's basketball coach Brenda Kirkpatrick Brown and women's soccer coach Clifton Bush joined their student-athletes at the front of the room and spoke to how proud they are of their pupils and how thankful they are to those who help contribute to athletic scholarships.

Cone then called up sophomore Stephen Edoka from the men's basketball team, who talked about his journey to the United States from Nigeria and how training with his teammates that has worked to prepare them to face adversity. He also spoke to an NCAA seminar he attended that focused on diversity and inclusion and how it helped him in his adjustment to living in a new country.

Men's basketball head coach Mike Morrell then took to the front of the room to brag on his team for how they've come together and thanked the crowd for their support of the Bulldogs.

Before dismissing everyone, Cone brought up freshman Bri Orr of the women's golf team, who spoke to why she chose to come to UNC Asheville and what her favorite part has been so far.

After the formal ending of the program, those in attendance stuck around even longer and continued to mingle and learn more about each other.
