ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's volleyball team is set to compete in its final non-conference tournament of the regular season when it travels to Statesboro, Georgia, to play in the Georgia Southern Invitational, Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs (4-3) will face off first against the host Eagles (2-2) at 11 a.m., Friday, at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles opened their season with a 1-2 showing at the Mercer Bears Classic, but had their second tournament appearance, scheduled in Daytona Beach, canceled due to Hurricane Dorian. The Eagles are coming off a sweep of USC Upstate, whom they hosted last Saturday.
The Bulldogs will have another early day, Saturday, as they'll take the court against Southern Miss at 10 a.m. The Golden Eagles are 0-7 entering the tournament and have not taken a point since their season-opening match against Seattle. They last played, Tuesday, against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 3-1 home stand in which they hosted a tournament of their own this past weekend, going 2-1 with victories against Eastern Kentucky (3-0) and North Carolina A&T (3-1). Most recently, they swept South Carolina State in a Tuesday night home match.
Senior Julia Borges has been a Swiss Army Knife for the Bulldogs in the early part of the season, leading the team with 68 kills, eight solo blocks, 19 total blocks and 87.5 points, while ranking second on the team with 77 digs.
Senior Ansley Rooks and sophomore Molly Hackett have also featured strongly in the attack, notching 53 and 52 kills, respectively, while senior Julia Loveday and junior Cecilia Stack each have 34. Sophomore Grace Volk and senior Kailey Hackett have split time at setter, combining for 213 assists, led by 127 from Volk.
Defensively, Stack has been a force along the net with Borges, recording 15 block assists on the season. Junior Kasey West has taken over at the libero spot and leads the team with 87 digs.
