Chillson’s Golden Goal Lifts Bulldogs over Bucs

08.25.2019 | Women's Soccer

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team defeated ETSU Sunday night in Johnson City, Tenn. with a golden goal in overtime from junior Skyler Chillson on an assist by Chloe Lamenzo.

This was the first Bulldog victory over ETSU since the 2009 season.

Strong defensive efforts from both teams took over in the first half as the score stayed steady at 0-0 after the first 45. The Bucs took six shots in the first half, while the Bulldogs countered with five.

Both teams traded shots through the first 16 minutes at two apiece. ETSU took a shot on goal in minute 22 that was saved with a jumping effort from the Bulldog goalkeeper, Courtney O'Malley.

With two minutes left in the first half, Maya Gutman took a shot from the right side that was saved by the ETSU goalkeeper.

O'Malley picked up three more saves in the first 30 minutes of the second half as the ETSU offense couldn't find the back of the net.

With nine minutes left in second half, Gillian Oyos took UNC Asheville's first shot on goal that was saved by a tremendous effort by the Bucs goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Oyos took another shot from the middle that missed just high of the goalpost.

At the end of regulation, the score remained 0-0 sending the game to overtime.

Ava Nkadi took a shot on goal that was saved by the ETSU goalkeeper just three minutes into overtime. Three minutes later, with only four minutes remaining in the overtime period, Chillson found the back of the net to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 victory.

Cliff Notes
On head coach Clifton Bush's first career victory:
"At this point I don't quite know if I have words for it. This is a quality team that we just played today and going into overtime shows how tough of an opponent that is. Were we ready this early to get a result on the road versus such a quality opponent like ETSU? I think those are the things that I don't know if I have enough to put into words yet."

On the entire team contributing:
"All we have focused on since the final whistle from the American game is how do we collectively work together as one unit. I think we saw today better organization, especially defensively, we were much more compact and more closed in, side to side and top to bottom. I think that collective effort really underscores how smart these women really are in the game of football. These women can adapt and change on the fly from game to game. We had a gutsy performance individually as well. Everyone contributed honest minutes in their individual efforts that culminated in a team effort that resulted in a win."
