ASHEVILLE, N.C. -Â UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone announced the hiring of Stefan Nolet as Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations on Wednesday, August 14.
"We are very excited to have Stefan join our staff," stated Janet R. Cone. "His skills and experiences are going to enable us to keep climbing to new heights. Please help us welcome Stefan to the UNC Asheville Bulldog Team."
In his current role, Nolet will oversee all the Bulldogs' external units, including athletic communications, marketing, ticketing, digital media and video production. He also will serve as the primary media contact for men's basketball, men's soccer and volleyball, among others.
Nolet comes to UNC Asheville after spending the previous athletic year as Assistant Director of Athletics Communications at Austin Peay State University, where he served as the primary media contact for the Governors' football team. He also handled communications duties for the Governors' beach volleyball team and assisted with softball.
As a key contributor to the content plan for the football program, Nolet helped Austin Peay's football Twitter account rank in the top 15 among FCS football accounts in fan interaction during the 2018 season. His promotion of an assistant coach's story about his daughter's battle with a rare genetic mutation helped raise more than $150,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help alleviate the family's burden of medical costs.
"I'm incredibly thankful to Janet Cone, Terri Brne and the entire senior staff at UNC Asheville for trusting me with this opportunity," Nolet said. "I've been blown away by the external team in place here, and I'm excited to get to work with them to find creative and innovative ways to showcase our Bulldog student-athletes."
"Our aim is to be the premiere athletics external unit in the Big South Conference, and I know we have the people in place to make it happen!"
Prior to Austin Peay, Nolet spent six years as the Media Relations Director of the Independence Bowl Foundation, managing external communications, serving as a spokesperson and overseeing community relations endeavors, while assisting in marketing efforts, sponsorships and event planning. During his time in Shreveport, he worked with premier college football programs such as Miami, Florida State, South Carolina, Arizona and Virginia Tech, among others.
Nolet earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Broadcasting with emphases in sports media and public relations from Oklahoma State in 2011, where he worked as a student assistant and intern in the athletic communications office for two seasons. He earned a Master of Education in Sports and Exercise Leadership from East Texas Baptist University in December of 2014.
He has assisted in the media operations of numerous events, including Super Bowl LI in his hometown of Houston, the NBA playoffs in Oklahoma City, the Big 12 Baseball Championship, the NCAA Men's Golf Championships and multiple AdvoCare Kickoff Classics in AT&T Stadium.
