CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville has been declared the winner of the Big South Conference's annual Institutional Sportsmanship Award for the 2018-19 athletic season.
Asheville receives the honor for the first time since the award was established in 2005-06. The league office officially announced the honor for UNC Asheville on Thursday, June 27, 2019.Â
Â
The overall winner is determined on a system that recognizes the highest percentage of the maximum points an institution is capable of receiving for each team award. The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each conference championship, and eight different institutions were honored for the 2018-19 campaign, which are listed below.
Â
UNC Asheville, which was honored with a league-high seven team sportsmanship awards in 2018-19, was tops among the Big South membership with a 36.13 percentage of the maximum points received in its sponsored league sports.Â
The Bulldogs were voted by Big South student-athletes as the top sportsmanship team in women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, women's indoor track & field, women's tennis (co-winner) and men's and women's outdoor track & field. Â
