Bulldogs Finish Day One of Big South Outdoor Track & Field Conference Championships

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams opened competition at the Big South Conference Championships on Wednesday.
There were seven track events and seven field events during the first day of the meet. There were also four heptathlon events and five decathlon events.
Claudia Prieto Alcaide paced the Bulldogs on the first day of competition with a fifth-place finish in the women's long jump with a jump of 5.45 meters. Asia Washington finished the women's long jump with an 11th place finish with a jump of 5.21 meters.
In women's discus, Ke'Shonna Gay impressed with a throw of 29.72 meters and her teammate, Julia McAfee, finished just behind her with a throw of 28.86 meters.
Victor Mathuthu secured a top 10 finish in the men's long jump with a jump of 6.84 meters.
Jack Choiniere finished ninth overall in the men's discus with a throw of 43.01 meters.
Blanton Gillespie completed a throw of 37.85 meters in the men's javelin.
Nick Roberts and Grant Lindsay both competed in the men's 400m hurdle prelims. Roberts finished with a time of 56.26 while Lindsay finished with a time of 57.12.
Desire Brown claimed a top 10 finish in the women's 200m prelims. Brown had a time of 25.18. Kindra Mingo finished one spot behind Brown with a time of 25.25.
Three Bulldogs ran in the men's 200m prelims. Tyree McFalling led the group with a time of 22.33 while Akin Williams finished with a time of 22.34. Tim Thorpe was the final Bulldog to compete in the event and ran a time of 22.54.
In the women's 1500m prelims, Madeline Nichols finished 14th overall with a time of 4:56.17.
Two Bulldogs competed in the women's 10000m. Megan Brewer finished with a time of 42:21.05 and India Appleton finished with a time of 43:28.08.
Thomas Little concluded the Bulldogs' impressive day with a seventh-place finish in the men's 10000m. Little finished the event with a time of 33:35.35.
The Big South Conference Championships will continue on Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. with the remaining decathlon and heptathlon events. The field events will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the track events are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The meet will conclude on Friday with events beginning at 1 p.m.
