ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball is a significant program within the athletics department and the future is incredibly bright for the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field.

That bright future has been made possible due to the efforts of many over the years, but of late a tremendous effort has been put in place to make critical improvements to Greenwood Field.

In fact, just over the last year alone a new championship outfield wall and backstop netting system has been installed to provide a safe experience for the UNC Asheville student-athletes along with a brand-new scoreboard and a new outdoor batting cage.

In addition, funding has already been completed for updated home and visitor dugouts that will include bathroom facilities and storage areas. The new dugouts are scheduled to debut in the 2020 season at Greenwood Field.

The process to make Greenwood Field one of the premier ballparks in the Big South and area is still a work in progress, but the ability to cement the future of the Bulldog baseball facility was made even stronger recently with the announcement of a $250,000 matching gift to UNC Asheville baseball.

The anonymous $250,000 matching gift has been made in hopes of raising another $250,000 by Dec. 31, 2019.

"Continuing the momentum to build Greenwood Field into the facility that our Bulldogs deserve is vital," UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone said. "I cannot say thank you enough for this $250,000 matching gift that will truly enhance our baseball program and update our facility. Our goal is to make Greenwood Field into a place that student-athletes, coaches and college baseball fans can be proud of.  With the help of our Bulldog Friends we can make this dream a reality."

UNC Asheville baseball head coach Scott Friedholm knows that a renovated and enhanced Greenwood Field would make a huge difference for his student-athletes on and off the field of play.

"UNC Asheville is a special place," Friedholm said. "We have one of the premier public universities in the country, we are located in a destination city and we continue to enhance the baseball facilities for our student-athletes, coaches and fans. Our goal is to develop quality young men on and off the field, and these improvements will help us with that goal.  We can't thank our anonymous donor enough for their commitment to the university and our program. We are extremely excited about the future of Bulldog baseball."
