BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team dropped their final regular season match 4-3 to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday afternoon.
UNC Asheville now ends the regular season with an impressive 19-4 overall record and a 6-2 record in Big South Conference matchups.
"Obviously this is a tough one for us today. We had a battle coming in," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "I thought we competed as hard as we could all the way up and down. This is a particularly tough place to play. 4-3, that's one of those matches that could go either way. A little break here and there and it could've been different. They are a great team and all the credit to them. We're looking forward to going to the Big South Conference tournament next week. We feel pretty good about our team. There is a lot of belief in what we're going to be able to do and we're excited for what's next."
The match began with Gardner-Webb (10-7, 5-1) taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
The singles portion of the match proved to be a true dogfight as UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb would split the singles matches 3-3 in this Battle of the Bulldogs.
Freshman Quinn Fender grabbed UNC Asheville's first point with a dominating match at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Charlie Morkel picked up the win at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Morkel's victory was his team-leading 16th singles win of the season.
Freshman Leo Bierbaum kept pace with Morkel with a 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 5 for his 15th singles win of the season.
Gardner-Webb won the matches at No.1, No. 2 and No. 4 to claim the victory.
Next for UNC Asheville is the 2019 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championships. The four-day tournament will be held on April 17-20 on the campus of Radford University in Radford, Va.
