Men’s Tennis to Host Hampton on Saturday as Part of UNC Asheville Tennis Doubleheader

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team is scheduled to host Hampton at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, in what will be the Bulldogs' final home match of the 2019 season.

The match will be part of a doubleheader with UNC Asheville women's tennis also taking on Hampton at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

UNC Asheville men's tennis is tied for first place in the Big South Conference with a 5-1 record (Full Standings). The Bulldogs are 18-3 overall on the season. UNC Asheville has been dominant on its home courts, playing to an undefeated 9-0 home record this season.

BULLDOG BITES

Senior Day

UNC Asheville men's tennis will honor their two seniors prior to the match versus Hampton on Saturday. This duo includes Henry Patten and Olly Cull. Both have been a part of Bulldog tennis for the last four seasons.

Patten has a 60-9 singles record during the spring season with the Bulldogs. Patten's best season was his sophomore season in 2017 when he went an undefeated 19-0 during the regular season. He closed out his junior season ranked 60th nationally in singles and participated in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships where he became only the second in Big South men's tennis history to win a match over Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame on May 23, 2018.

Cull has seen action in all four seasons and has claimed 25 singles wins during his Bulldog career.

The duo of Patten and Cull have been doubles partners for two seasons. The duo has gone 15-8 playing together and was ranked as high as 38th nationally during the 2018 season.

After Saturday's matchup with Hampton, the Bulldogs will have one regular season match remaining.

Breaking Down the Bulldogs

Two-time Big South Player of the Year Henry Patten and sophomore Charlie Morkel are tied for the Bulldogs' lead in wins with each collecting 14 singles victories on the season. Patten has played all of his matches at No. 1, while Morkel has played at No. 1-5.

Freshman Leo Bierbaum is right behind with 13 wins and has played at No. 4-6 thus far. Oli Nolan currently has 11 wins on the season and freshman Sirawit Daosaengsawang has picked up 10 wins. Nolan has played all his matches at No. 1-2, while Daosaengsawang has played at No. 1-4.

In doubles, Oli Nolan and Henry Patten are an impressive 7-0 in the spring season. Despite still being undefeated on the year the pairing is now ranked second nationally after spending much of the spring ranked No. 1. 

Nolan and Patten went undefeated playing together during the fall and won three titles including the national championship victory at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.

Scouting Hampton

Hampton is 1-11 on the season and 0-3 in the Big South Conference. The Pirates are currently on a five-match losing streak. They have fallen to Presbyterian, Winthrop and Radford already this season. The Pirates will face Longwood on Friday, April 5, before their matchup with the Bulldogs on Saturday.
