KANSAS CITY – UNC Asheville volleyball standout Julia Borges recently had the unique opportunity to attend the NCAA/Women Leaders in College Sports Women's Leadership Symposium.
The Women's Leadership Symposium (WLS) was held from April 24-26 in Kansas City, Mo. and it is developed for women aspiring to or just beginning a career in intercollegiate athletics. The program aims to enrich participants' skills, expand their professional network and promote the recruitment and retention of women working in intercollegiate athletics administration.
Borges and Rylie Parkhurst, who is a junior guard on the women's basketball team at USC Upstate, represented the Big South Conference at the event.
"It was such an awesome opportunity," Borges said. "They were all professionals and it was a great opportunity to connect and create authentic relationships. There was also a lot of talk about how to become successful women in an area that in the past has been dominated by males."
A rising senior right side from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Borges closed out her first season in a Bulldog uniform as a junior in 2018 averaging 2.34 kills per set. Borges collected four double-doubles during the 2018 season.
Borges finished the season with 11 double-digit kill performances. She had a season-best 17 kills and 16 digs in UNC Asheville's thrilling Big South Tournament quarterfinal win over USC Upstate at the Justice Center on Friday, Nov. 16.
She was named first-team All-State by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) and second-team All-Big South.
"I want to become a professional volleyball player obviously after I graduate, but with my degree from UNC Asheville, I want to become a sports psychologist in the future and hopefully come back to the United States and work here," Borges said. "That's why the Women's Leadership Symposium was such a great opportunity to talk with them and see how they got where they are right now. Thanks so much to the Big South Conference for this tremendous opportunity."
