Bulldogs Close Out Regular Season With Impressive Finishes at Don McGarey Invitational

KENNESAW, Ga. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Don McGarey Invitational at Kennesaw State University on April 26-27.

There were a total of 38 events with 10 taking place on Friday and the remaining 28 concluding on Saturday.

Several Bulldogs broke personal bests during the two-day meet and now find themselves climbing into the Bulldog record books. 

BULLDOG BITES

Friday Highlights
Three Bulldogs competed in the women's javelin. Chelsea Salmon finished in the top 10 with a throw of 30.80 meters. Ke'Shonna Gay secured a throw of 23.40 meters while her teammate Julia McAfee finished one spot behind her with a throw of 21.87 meters.

Salmon, Gay and McAfee also competed in the women's discus. McAfee grabbed a top 10 finish with a throw of 32.28 meters while Salmon finished two spots behind with a throw of 25.11 meters. Gay finished just off her teammates lead with a 20.94 meter throw.  

Blanton Gillespie secured a fourth-place finish in the men's javelin with a throw of 32.47 meters.

Jack Choiniere secured a seventh-place finish in the men's discus with a throw of 42.63 meters.

Three Bulldogs secured impressive finishes in the women's long jump. Asia Washington finished eighth overall with a jump of 5.43 meters. Claudia Prieto Alcaide jumped 5.19 meters while Mydison Askew jumped 4.98 meters.

Saturday Highlights
UNC Asheville had three top 10 performers in the women's 1500m. Kelley Coleman finished an impressive third overall in the women's 1500m run with a time of 4:52.91 while Megan Brewer secured a seventh-place finish with a time of 5:01.47. Morgan Costelloe finished tenth with a time of 5:06.90.

Two Bulldogs secured top 10 finishes in the men's 1500m. Sage Turner finished sixth overall with a time of 4:02.12 while Zach Boone finished ninth with a time of 4:06.02.

Jeff Blake and Nick Roberts finished side by side in the men's 110m hurdles. Blake finished with a time of 15.73 while Roberts had a time of 15.74.

Khadeesha Crumbly secured a seventh-place finish in the women's 400m dash with a time of 1:00.26. Bri Froehling finished a few spots behind her teammate with a time of 1:04.96.

Tim Thorpe was the only Bulldog to compete in the men's 400m dash and the freshman finished with a time of 53.94.

Four Bulldogs competed in the women's 100m dash. Kindra Mingo was the highest finishing Bulldog with a time of 12.30 which broke her personal previous best of 12.39 and keeps the freshman in third place in the Bulldog record book. Asia Washington finished three spots behind her teammate with a time of 12.51. Elizabeth Crenshaw ran a 12.91 while Mydison Askew finished with a time of 13.02.

Akin Williams finished in the top 15 in the men's 100m dash with a time of 11.00.

Alyx Evans secured a fourth-place finish in the women's 800m with a time of 2:18.54. Madeline Nichols finished 11th overall with a time of 2:24.78 while Corey McVay finished three spots further with a time of 2:33.90. Samantha Hirsch ran a time of 2:35.89 while Kelley Petroski finished with a time of 2:47.09.

Graham Parker finished fifth overall in the men's 800m with a time of 1:55.76. Jack Clemens finished eight seconds behind his teammate with a time of 2:03.49 which was good enough for a 12th place finish.

Nick Roberts secured a third-place finish in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 55.73. That time will move the freshman into fifth place in UNC Asheville history in the event. Grant Lindsay ran the men's 400m hurdles in 58.41.

Desire Brown set a new personal best to remain in third place in UNC Asheville history in the women's 200m dash. Brown finished with a time of 25.08 which beats her previous personal best of 25.17.

Mingo now moves into fourth place in UNC Asheville history in the women's 200m dash with a time of 25.33.

Khadeesha Crumbly ran the women's 200m with a time of 26.12 while Elizabeth Crenshaw ran the event in 26.90 seconds.

Tyree McFalling ran the men's 200m dash in 22.26 seconds. That time moves the junior sprinter into fourth place in UNC Asheville history. Three other Bulldogs ran in the event with Williams finishing with a time of 22.78 just behind McFalling. Thorpe finished with a 22.93 and Jeff Blake finished with a time of 23.44.

Jack Choiniere set a new personal best in the men's shot put. The freshman completed a throw of 14.75 meters which was good enough for sixth place. The throw broke Choiniere's previous personal best of 14.60 meters and keeps the freshman in the Bulldog record book as the third best throw in UNC Asheville history.   

Julia McAfee and Ke'Shonna Gay competed in the women's shot put. McAfee completed a throw of 10.25 meters while Gay completed a throw of 10.08 meters.

Claudia Prieto Alcaide jumped her way into the number two spot in UNC Asheville history in the women's triple jump with a jump of 11.48 meters.

Asia Washington and Mydison Askew also competed in the women's triple jump. Washington jumped 10.39 meters and Askew jumped 9.92 meters.

Huntyr Hopkins jumped 1.48 meters while competing in the women's high jump.

What's Next?
UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field will compete in the Big South Championships on May 8-10 in Rock Hill, S.C. on the campus of Winthrop University.
