Women's athletics has grown a ton over the last 50 years, but broadcasting legend Lesley Visser knows there is still a ton of growth ahead.
That's why she is so excited to be the keynote speaker for this year's "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo that will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the Kimmel Arena floor inside the Wilma M. Sherrill Center.
"When I played high school basketball there were six players and only two of us could cross half court," Visser said. "We were called rovers. You would think this is the 1870s, but it was the 1970s. That's how far we have come and people like (UNC Asheville Director of Athletics) Janet R. Cone, they have carried the torch. She is so respected and there is nothing that a female student-athlete can ask Janet that she cannot answer."
The first person to be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the 2006 recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award which recognizes long-time exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football, Visser was voted the No.1 Female Sportscaster of all-time in a poll taken by the American Sportscasters Association. She currently works for CBS Sports and she was elected to the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2015.
Visser is also the only sportscaster in history (male or female) who has worked on Final Four, NBA Finals, World Series, Triple Crown, Monday Night Football, the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Figure Skating Championships and U.S. Open (tennis) network broadcasts.
Visser is excited to be able to share her story to all of those in attendance at the 2019 "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo.
"I am very excited about coming and speaking to the students and I hope I can share with those in attendance my journey as a pioneer and a trailblazer," Visser said. "I want them to come away being fearless because when I started this type of job did not exist for women. Whatever it is they want to do, I am the example that they can do it. Whatever they are – white, black, hispanic, gay, straight, jewish, catholic – whatever it is, it can be done. I am hopeful that the students will not be afraid of their dreams."
The "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo is one of the most important events on the calendar each and every year for UNC Asheville athletics and time is running out to register. There is no cost to register, but you must be registered to attend.
