Bulldogs Fall to Campbell in Semifinals of Big South Championships

RADFORD, Va. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team fell to Campbell 4-0 in the semifinal round of the Big South Championships on Friday afternoon.
In doubles, Campbell won the match at No. 1 but Oli Nolan and Leo Bierbaum evened things up with a 6-4 win at No. 3. Olly Cull and Sirawit Daosaengsawang forced a tiebreak at No. 2 before falling to Campbell to give the Camels the doubles point.
In singles, Nolan went down 2-0 at No. 2 before winning the next six points unanswered to win the first set 6-2. Freshman Quinn Fender won the first set at No. 6 in a tiebreak while fellow freshman, Bierbaum, finished off the first set at No. 5 with a 7-5 win.
The trio of Nolan, Fender and Bierbaum were all close to winning their second sets to give the Bulldogs a much-needed advantage when the Camels finished off the matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 with wins to give Campbell the 4-0 victory.
UNC Asheville men's tennis now puts an end to an impressive 2019 spring season. The Bulldogs finish with a 20-5 overall record, and they were a perfect 10-0 in matches played at home at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
Six members of the UNC Asheville men's tennis team finished with double digit singles wins in the 2019 season.
In doubles, Oli Nolan and Henry Patten were an impressive 7-0 in the spring season. Despite being undefeated on the year the pairing is ranked second nationally after spending much of the spring ranked No. 1.Â
Nolan and Patten went undefeated playing together during the fall and won three titles including the national championship victory at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
