Bulldogs Scheduled to Play Two Road Matches This Weekend

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's team will hit the road for two conference matches this weekend.

First, the Bulldogs will take on Campbell on Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. in Buies Creek, N.C. A day later the Bulldogs will travel to Farmville, Va. for a matchup with Longwood at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 31.

The Bulldogs are 3-0 in the Big South Conference and are 16-2 overall.

Preseason Rankings

This weekend the Bulldogs will be facing two of the top four preseason ranked teams. Campbell was voted on as the No. 1 team prior to the season and Longwood was voted as the No. 4 team.

UNC Asheville was tied for fifth place in the preseason rankings.

The Bulldogs currently sit atop of the Big South Conference standings having won games versus the preseason ranked No. 2, No. 7 and No. 8 teams. UNC Asheville is the only team in the Big South Conference with three conference victories without a loss and has four more overall wins than the next closest team.

UNC Asheville is in the midst of what could be a historic season with a 16-2 overall record. The Bulldogs put together a dominant non-conference portion of the schedule going 13-2 and winning 10 straight matches to open the 2019 season.

Big South Conference Honors

UNC Asheville swept the Big South Men's Tennis weekly awards, the league announced on March 27, 2019, with Henry Patten named Player of the Week and Leo Bierbaum chosen Freshman of the Week.

Patten has now been named Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week twice in the 2019 spring season.

Bierbaum's honoring is the first of his career.

Patten opened up league play last week a perfect 2-0 in singles and doubles. In singles, Patten bested Radford's No. 1 Yevhen Sirous 6-1, 6-2. The next day he downed Winthrop's No. 1 Diego Quieroz 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.

In doubles, the Manningtree, Essex, United Kingdom native teamed with Olly Cull to down Radford's No. 1 doubles duo of Sirous and Rodrigo Magalhaes 6-1 before collecting a 6-3 win over Winthrop's No. 1 doubles duo of Gabriel Dias and Aditya Gokhale.

Bierbaum was an impressive 2-0 last week for the Bulldogs to open league play. The Nürnberg, Germany native first bested Andres Silva of Radford 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. He followed that up with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Lluis Miralles of Winthrop at No. 6 singles.

Breaking Down the Bulldogs

Two-time Big South Player of the Year Henry Patten leads the Bulldogs with 12 wins in singles on the season. Patten has played all of his matches at No. 1.

Leo Bierbaum and Charlie Morkel are right on his heels with eleven wins each in singles on the season. Bierbaum has played mainly No. 4-6, while Morkel has played in the 1-5 singles flights this season thus far. Oli Nolan and Sirawit Daosaengsawang have both put together impressive springs as well. Nolan has ten wins on the season and has played all his matches at No. 1-2, while Daosaengsawang has nine wins and has played at No. 1-4.

In doubles, Oli Nolan and Henry Patten are an impressive 7-0 in the spring season. Despite still being undefeated on the year the pairing is now ranked second nationally after spending much of the spring ranked No. 1. 

Nolan and Patten went undefeated playing together during the fall and won three titles including the national championship victory at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. 

Scouting Campbell

Campbell is 10-4 on the season and is 3-1 in the Big South Conference. They have defeated USC Upstate, Presbyterian and Longwood. The Camels fell 5-2 to Gardner-Webb on the road. Campbell will host Winthrop on Friday, March 29 before their matchup with the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Longwood

Longwood is 10-5 overall and 1-2 against Big South Conference opponents. The Lancers defeated Winthrop to kick off their conference season and have since fallen to Radford and Campbell. Longwood's only home match of the season thus far was a 4-3 loss to Campbell on March 22. The Lancers will host Presbyterian on Saturday, March 30 before their matchup with the Bulldogs on Sunday.

Up Next

UNC Asheville will return home next week for their final two home matches of the season. The Bulldogs will first host Presbyterian on Wednesday, April 3 at 3 p.m. before hosting Hampton on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown. The Bulldogs are currently an undefeated 8-0 on their home courts.
