ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has a simple message for all collegiate student-athletes and students:
"It's okay to ask for help."
UNC Asheville senior swimming & diving student-athlete and current SAAC President Elizabeth Conte is among many in the Big South Conference who want to remove the stigma that surrounds the discussion of mental in today's society.
"The SAAC is bringing the conversation of mental health to light because so many students and student-athletes alike struggle without being knowledgeable of the resources they are provided and the people in place who want to help," Conte said. "The goal is to work to change the conversation around mental health in order to destigmatize it. As student-athletes, we have the power to 'End The Stigma' on our campus and normalize the conversation."
UNC Asheville is holding a special "Mental Health Awareness Week" on its campus March 25-31.
Over the course of the week there will be different events sponsored by UNC Asheville that will be done to help #EndTheStigma.
UNC Asheville's "Mental Health Awareness Week" is being sponsored by the UNC Asheville SAAC, the Health and Counseling Center, the Health and Wellness Department and Mission Health.
UNC Asheville athletics is helping to raise awareness over the course of the important week by holding a "Green Out" at the series finale between Longwood and UNC Asheville baseball at Greenwood Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Over the course of the game there will food, stickers, wristbands and ribbons to help raise awareness.
On Sunday, March 31, in the Ingles Mountain View Room, student-athletes will also hear from former college basketball player Maria Young on the subject.
