Dengokl Drops 21 Points in First Round Loss in WBI to Appalachian State

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite Sonora Dengokl tallying a game-high 21 points, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), 57-55, to Appalachian State on Wednesday inside Kimmel Arena.

Appalachian State started the game red hot, as it outscored the Bulldogs by 13 points in the opening 10-minute session, 19-6. Nadiria Evans had all six Asheville points in the opening session.
The Bulldogs quickly responded in the second quarter, as they outscored the Mountaineers, 23-13, to pull the deficit to three. The Bulldogs made eight trips to the charity stripe and converted on seven to help the Bulldog offense. Dengokl tallied 10 points in the stanza, as she connected on four field goals. Jessica Wall added seven points, which included a made three-pointer and four free throws.
At the halftime break, Appalachian State held a narrow three-point lead on the Bulldogs, 32-29. Three Bulldogs – Dengokl, Wall and Evans – combined for 23 of the team's 29 points in the opening half. The Bulldogs held a five-rebound advantage in the opening half and converted on six more free throws than the Mountaineers.
The third stanza was an offensive struggle for both clubs, as they combined for eight made field goals. The Mountaineers did hold a three-point advantage in the quarter, 12-9, to take the six-point lead into the final quarter, 44-38.
The Bulldogs tried to pull off the comeback victory but ultimately fell short by two points, 57-55. UNC Asheville was able to tie the contest twice in the final quarter, including at the 2:33 mark in the fourth. App State pulled ahead again, but the Bulldogs responded to tie the game with 1:20 left in the contest. The Mountaineers went on a 4-0 run to pull ahead by two possessions, 57-53. Evans made it a two-point game thanks to back-to-back made free throws with 33 seconds left. After an ASU missed three-pointer, the Bulldogs advanced the ball and had a chance to tie the game, but the shot was called off as time expired.
Dengokl had a game-high 21 points in the game. The guard went 8-for-16 from the field and went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also added four rebounds in 28 minutes.
Evans was the second Bulldog in double digits, as the sophomore netted 10 points. She connected on three field goals and four free throws.
Evans and Brooke Jordan-Brown each added nine points on six combined field goals.
Jordan-Brown led the team with nine rebounds. All of those boards were on the defensive glass.
As a team, UNC Asheville nearly went perfect from the free throw line, 14-for-15.
UNC Asheville falls to 17-15 to end the year, and Appalachian State moves to 19-14 overall.Quotable
