The WBI invited 16 teams to play in the prestigious tournament, and the Bulldogs were selected as one of eight teams to host the opening round of the tournament.

The winner between UNC Asheville and Appalachian State will advance to play the winner of Davidson and Marshall. The second round contest will take place on Sunday, March 24 or Monday, March 25 with the host location to be determined.

Wednesday's game will mark the second straight season the Bulldogs have played and hosted a WBI game. The 2019 tournament will mark the 10th straight year the Women's Basketball Invitational has been in existence.

About Appalachian State and Previous History with the Mountaineers

Appalachian State enters postseason play with an 18-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Sun Belt Conference action. Like the Bulldogs, the Mountaineers made it to the semifinals of their respective league tournament. Appalachian State was handed a 16-point loss to Little Rock, 80-64, to conclude the Sun Belt Tournament.

However, the Mountaineers went 6-2 in their final eight games with wins over Georgia State (also competing in the WBI), Coastal Carolina (also competing in WBI), South Alabama, Louisiana, UL Monroe and Georgia Southern.

The Bulldogs and Mountaineers met last season on the hardwood, and UNC Asheville came out victorious in overtime, 69-60, in Kimmel Arena. Four Bulldogs posted double-digit performances in Jessica Wall, Khaila Webb, Bronaza Fitzgerald and Zip Scott

Wednesday's meeting will mark the 19th all-time meeting between the two clubs. In the last five head-to-head contests, Appalachian State holds a narrow 3-2 advantage.
