Madness Lecture 226

UNC Asheville Holds Unique March Madness Lecture at OLLI

02.26.2019 | Athletics News

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Every year UNC Asheville plays a vital role in the selection of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament with Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone serving on the March Madness committee.

Cone has served on the March Madness committee for the last five basketball seasons and she has a truly unique insight into what it means to participate in the NCAA Tournament.

Her tremendous knowledge is why on Feb. 26, 2019, in the Manheimer Room at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Reuter Center it made perfect sense that UNC Asheville would hold a special March Madness Lecture.

The presentation also featured former Sports Illustrated advertising sales manager, journalist, teacher, referee and sports historian Larry Griswold along with Cone.

Both Cone and Griswold broke down March Madness for the large crowd in attendance and explained its role in the greater sports landscape.

In addition, all of those in attendance were also treated to a first-class college basketball experience leading into March Madness by being able to attend the Big South women's basketball showdown between Radford and UNC Asheville at Kimmel Arena.

"This particular lecture is something that I look forward to every year," Cone said. "It's an honor to serve on the March Madness committee, and I love being able to share some of my experiences with our friends at UNC Asheville. This is truly one of the best times of the year."
