Boone and Washington Move Into UNC Asheville Record Books

– Behind historic marks from sophomore Asia Washington in the women's long jump and senior Zach Boone in the men's 3000m, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field programs wrapped up a successful opening day at the Carolina Challenge on Friday inside the South Carolina Track & Field Complex. 

Washington made the third-longest jump in UNC Asheville history in the long jump (5.38m), and Boone moved into the top 5 with a 8:36.83 time in the 3000m.

Highlights

In the first event for UNC Asheville (men's shot put), Jack Choiniere led the Bulldogs. The rookie made a throw of 13.63m, which pushed him to a 12th-place finish.

Washington led the Bulldogs with a historic leap of 5.38m in the long jump, as she finished 10th overall. Her previous best indoor mark was 5.27m. Claudia Prieto Alcaide fell 0.01m away from matching Washington, as the freshman made a leap of 5.37m en route to an 11th-place finish.

In the first track event of the meet, Prieto Alcaide was UNC Asheville's fastest runner in the women's 60m qualifier. The freshman posted a time of 7.99 and finished 27th out of 72 runners. Washington and Kindra Mingo finished in the middle of the pack with 8.17 and 8.19 times, respectively.

Denley Joseph and Akin Williams paced the Bulldogs in the men's 60m qualifier, as they finished 33rd and 41st, respectively. Joseph clocked a time of 7.11, while Williams posted a 7.16 mark. Victor Mathuthu ran a 7.22 mark and placed 51st.

Freshman duo - Madeline Nichols and Samantha Decker - both led UNC Asheville in the women's one mile run. Nichols finished 27th overall with a 5:20.64, while Decker clocked a 5:52.04 time.

Juniors Graham Parker and Sage Turner ran fast in the men's side of the one mile. Parker posted a top-25 finish (23rd) with his time of 4:27.77, and Turner placed 34th with a 4:33.83. 

Out of the 106 total runners in the women's 400m, junior Desire Brown finished 45th. The Burgraw, N.C. native earned a 58.66 time.

After a successful meet last weekend at the Liberty Kickoff, junior Tyree McFalling posted another solid result in the men's 400m. McFalling finished 35th out of 108 runners. He ran a 49.89 time and was Asheville's fastest runner in the event.

Senior Kelley Coleman provided a top-10 finish for UNC Asheville on Friday in the women's 3000m. The Cincinnati, Ohio native clocked a 10:41.24 time. Teammate India Appleton finished seven spots behind Coleman in 17th, as she ran a 10:56.73. Megan Brewer rounded out the finishes for the Bulldogs, as she posted an 11:16.04 time. 

Boone turned heads in the men's 3000m, as he finished eighth overall. The senior from Bakersville, N.C. ran a 8:36.83 time, which moves him into fifth all-time in UNC Asheville history. He bested the previous fifth-fastest time by almost four and a half seconds. Thomas Little was impressive in the event as well. The sophomore finished 22nd overall with a time of 9:02.41.

In the final field event of the day for the Bulldogs, Julia McAfee and Ke'Shonna Gay represented UNC Asheville in the women's shot put. McAfee made a toss of 9.61m, while Gay made a throw of 8.44m.

What's Next?

The final day of the meet, Saturday, will start at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's 5000m. The first field event will be the women's pole vault at 10 a.m. followed by the women's weight throw at 11 a.m. The final events of the Carolina Challenge are the men's and women's 4x400 relays beginning at 4:10 p.m.
