ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To help promote the Rocky's Readers program presented by Zaxby's in the community, the UNC Asheville athletics department helped honor the quarterly "Mighty Oak" recipients at Oakley Elementary School on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.

The "Mighty Oak" recipients for the quarter were honored in two separate programs on Feb. 1 with kindergarten through second grade students honored first before third through fifth graders were honored to close out the special festivities.

UNC Asheville's beloved mascot, Rocky, was in attendance on the day to help hand out the "Mighty Oak" awards that are given to those that follow Oakley's three R's of being respectful, being responsible and being resourceful.

Assistant Director of Athletics for External Relations Brian Hand served as the speaker for both programs, and each student in attendance received a special Rocky's Readers presented by Zaxby's bookmark.

Oakley Elementary School principal Daniel P. Fusco also worked with UNC Asheville athletics to hand out scarves and t-shirts to select students at the event.

All of the "Mighty Oaks" recipients received a free ticket to the UNC Asheville men's basketball game vs. Charleston Southern at Kimmel Arena on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The 2019 Rocky's Readers program presented by Zaxby's is presently underway.

For the last 10 years, students from the Western Carolina area have participated with their school in the Rocky's Readers program. All students who complete their reading and return their log to the school are invited to come to the special Rocky's Readers game.

Over 5,000 students from 13 schools participated in Rocky's Readers presented by Zaxby's last year with over 1,150 completing the program.

In total, 5,078 books were read with one student even reading 30 books.

This year's Rocky's Readers celebration for those who accomplished their reading will be during the men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Saturday, March 2. The day will start with the UNC Asheville women's basketball team hosting Charleston Southern at 2 p.m. before the men close out the day by taking on High Point at 4:30 p.m.
