Rooks Named Big South Player of the Week After Career Performance on Senior Day

CHARLOTTE – Senior outside hitter Ansley Rooks of UNC Asheville's volleyball team has been selected as the Big South Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
It is the first conference weekly honor of Rooks' career, and it comes after a performance in which she set career-highs in kills with 18 and digs with 19, leading the Bulldogs to a victory against Hampton, 3-0, for their 10th sweep of the season.
The Hickory, N.C., native proved to be a thorn in the side of the Pirates from the get-go, recording eight of her 18 kills in the first set. She was instrumental in the Bulldogs recovering from a seven-point deficit in the second set, as she recorded three kills in a 9-2 run to close out set two with a victory.
Rooks recorded her 19 kills on a season-best .441 hitting percentage, and also chipped in two service aces and a block assist.
Saturday's performance against Hampton was Rooks' second double-double in as many nights, as she finished with 10 kills and 13 digs, Friday, against Campbell, finishing the regular season with eight double-doubles.
She had five kills in the first set to help the Bulldogs take a 1-0 lead in the match, and she scored on two aces in the third set, helping the Bulldogs to a 2-1 lead in the match.
All told, Rooks added four service aces and tied a season-best with four assists against the Camels. In two matches over the final weekend of regular-season competition, Rooks had 28 kills on a .326 hitting percentage, 32 digs, 35 points, six service aces, four assists and two total blocks.
It is the second Player of the Week award for the Bulldogs this season, as senior Julia Borges earned the honor, November 4. It is the third weekly honor of the season, with Borges named the Defensive Player of the Week, September 16.
The Bulldogs earned a spot in the Big South Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play fourth-seeded Presbyterian in a 4:30 p.m., Friday, matchup in Rock Hill, S.C.
