ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's volleyball team will close out its regular season at the Justice Center this weekend with a pair of Big South Conference matches, while also celebrating six seniors who will play their final matches at home.
Currently sitting in fifth place in the conference standings, this weekend's action will be critically important for seeding in the Big South Tournament the following weekend. The Bulldogs (12-11, 6-6) will host Campbell in a 6 p.m., Friday contest. Campbell is currently in a tie for third in the standings.
The Bulldogs will return to the court for a 2 p.m., Saturday, matchup with Hampton on Senior Day. The six seniors will be recognized at 1:40 p.m., so fans are encouraged to show up to the Justice Center early.
Senior Julia Borges leads the team in a number of categories, including kills (234), solo blocks (16), total blocks (58) and points (285). She is tied for the team lead with 42 block assists and is second with 226 digs.
Ansley Rooks has also had a strong flourish to her senior year, as she leads the team in service aces with 26, is second in kills (200) and points (231.5), and is third in digs (225).
Senior Kailey Hackett continues to be the force that drives the offense in conference play. She leads the team with 504 assists, including 379 since the start of Big South competition. She only has two matches with fewer than 20 assists in that span.
Despite missing a few weeks with injury, senior Julia Loveday is third on the team with 34 total blocks. She has 83 kills on the season with a .366 hitting percentage. Her hitting percentage was tops in the conference before she missed time.
Senior Carter Kennedy is one of just 10 players in program history to record more than 1,200 career assists. She has played in 12 matches this season, while senior defensive specialist Tearra Tatum has appeared in 11 matches.
Campbell enters Friday's matchup with a 13-12 record and a 7-5 mark in league play. The Camels defeated the Bulldogs, 3-0, in their matchup in Buies Creek, October 12. The Camels have lost their past three matchups, all in conference play.
Hampton comes into the weekend with a 7-16 overall record and a 2-10 Big South record. The Pirates defeated the Bulldogs in five sets, October 11, at Hampton after the Bulldogs had claimed the first two sets.
