Volleyball Hosts Pair of Conference Matches This Weekend

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's volleyball team continues its Big South Conference campaign with a pair of matchups this weekend, hosting Winthrop in a 6 p.m., Friday, contest and Gardner-Webb in a 2 p.m., Saturday, match at the Justice Center.
The Bulldogs (6-5) are coming off of a 3-1 home victory against USC Upstate last Saturday to open league play. In that matchup, the Bulldogs set season highs in kills (64) and assists (58), and tied their season high with a .333 hitting percentage.
Senior Ansley Rooks led the way with 17 kills and 15 digs against the Spartans, with the 17 digs representing her career-high for a match. On the season, she is tied for the team lead with 96 kills and is third with 107 digs.
Rooks is tied with senior Julia Borges for the team lead and kills, and Borges leads the team with 33 total blocks and is second with 116 digs. Known for her skills on the attack, Borges' defensive prowess earned her Big South Defensive Player of the Week, September 16.
Sophomore Grace Volk and senior Kailey Hackett have kept the offense moving all season, combining for 337 assists this season.
Defensively, junior Kasey West leads the team with 138 digs, and Julia Loveday is second on the team with 26 total blocks.
Winthrop (10-3) enters Friday's matchup as winners of their past seven matches, including defeats of Big South foes Presbyterian and Charleston Southern. The Eagles lead the conference in kills, assists and hitting percentage this season.
Gardner-Webb is 2-11 on the season and coming off of a pair of 3-0 losses to Charleston Southern and Presbyterian last weekend.
